Presenting the music of The King Of Jazz ~ Paul Whiteman
Since Russ is called THE PAUL WHITEMAN OF THE 21st CENTURY it's only fitting that he play Whiteman's music.
Russ has been a record collector for over 30 years and an avid fan of The King Of Jazz and his music.
He has a number of the old Whiteman 78's in his collection including the 1924 recording of Rhapsody In Blue.
The Whiteman Orchestra included in it's ranks such notables as Bix Beiderbeck, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey,
Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Red Nichols, Frankie Trumbauer and Jack Teagarden.
In 2009, Russ gained access to a handful of the actual arrangements that were played by
Paul Whiteman's Orchestra in the 20's and 30's. So the only logical thing to do next was PLAY THEM.
So he set about calling together some the best musicians (30 to be exact!) in Western North Carolina to do a concert.
The actual instrumentation of the orchestra is 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 6 Saxophones, 10 Violins, Tuba,
String Bass, Banjo, Guitar, Piano, Drums and Auxiliary Percussion.
That concert was given in March of 2010 to a standing room only audience.
Russ is in the midst of planning more concerts around North Carolina for 2011 and 2012.
